Safe Car Information from safercar.gov

By Jeffrey R. Nuckols, Esq.

We are all interested in the safety of cars on our roads and that we drive and ride in. You have probably heard or read about five star safety ratings. Well, did you know that you can look up the five star safety rating of cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs online? There is a great resource for that brought to you by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. You can find it at safercar.gov. On that web site you can navigate to the Vehicle Shoppers tab and then to the Search 5-Star Safety Ratings link, or just click here. There you can look up a car or compare safety ratings of two vehicles. Click on the title above for more.

An interesting note on the web resource is that some vehicles’ star rating may have right next to it a small black triangle with an explanation point inside. That means that there is additional information available beyond the star rating. For example, looking at the rating for a 2014 Toyota Prius C here, the car gets four-star ratings. Sounds pretty good. But the side crash rating has that black triangle next to it. Looking at the details of the side crash rating, there is a note about a specific finding during the side impact test. So there is additional information there that the star rating alone does not give you. It often pays to do some research.
