If a stolen car hits you who is responsible?

By: Renee Dial

Auto insurance is one of those things that we never think about until we need it.  Recently a car was stolen after a home invasion and the occupants fled after a 130mph chase in Melbourne, Florida near Pineda Causeway.  WFTV.com. Who would pay for your property damage and medical bills if you were involved in an accident with this vehicle? Click here to read more.

You might be surprised to find out that the owner of the vehicle’s insurance would probably not provide insurance as the accident was the result of the vehicle being stolen.  After the defendants are found guilty the judge may place restitution in the file for your damages but in all likelihood you will never see a dime.

This is the exact situation where your comp and collision will pay for your property damage and your UM insurance will provide insurance to compensate you for your injuries.  More and more I have clients that do not have this valuable coverage.  Remember, in Florida drivers do not have to carry bodily injury insurance to protect someone injured by them.  As such it is up to you to protect your family and other occupants of your vehicle in the event you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

I would be more than happy to discuss your insurance policy with you and explain your what the different types of insurance are.
